South Korean
electronics giants Samsung Electronics easily make up the best crop of IT
companies that exists in the world. While it deals with a wide range of
products, mobile phones happen to be one of the company’s primary products. The
major lineups of phones consist of the Galaxy series, Tizen series, Omnia
series, Wave series and feature phones.
Samsung
initially started to make feature phones and the first one, named SH-100, was
released in 1988. What followed that was a number of iterations for much
through the early nineties. It manufactured CDMA phones back in the late 90s,
after which, it started to manufacture GSM phones. The SGH series was primarily
aimed at European markets.
Much
throughout the 2000s, they manufactured plenty of feature phones. Then, in
2009, the company launched its first Android smartphone. The Omnia phones were
launched in 2008 and the Wave series in 2010. 2015 saw the release of the first
Samsung phone with its own OS, Tizen.
Samsung
entered the Indian mobile phone market in 2004. At that time, much of India’s
market was largely in the hands of Nokia, Sony Ericsson and Motorola. These
were well-established players when it came to feature phones, but Samsung with
its largely affordable set of phones started to increase in popularity. And, by
the end of the decade, Samsung started to have a bigger impact on the market
share. In fact, it ultimately emerged out on top, after Nokia, Sony Ericsson
and Motorola fell by the wayside for various reasons. By the end of 2011, the
company had made its way to the topmost position in the market, which it
retains even today.
Much of
Samsung’s rise is to be credited to its feature phones and affordable Android
phones which suits Indian customers very well.
Most of
Samsung’s feature phones are of plastic make. However, the Galaxy, Wave, Nexus,
Omnia and Tizen phones feature a mix of metal and plastic. Phones are pretty
well crafted and are good looking too. They also feature a strip of metal bezel
around them. Other than the phones that feature touchscreens, alphanumeric or
QWERTY keypads may be found.
Screen size
varies, as does the resolutions offered for viewing. The Galaxy Note phablet
series features some of the largest screens, along with the Galaxy S flagship
phones. Screens are usually IPS LCD or AMOLED displays, which has been the
trend of late with Samsung mobiles. Corning Gorilla Glass protection is
provided with most of the phones from the company. A number of color options
are also available for users to pick from.
Samsung
phones have always provided a rich array of features to their users. While the
feature phones do a great job of providing a great many basic features, such as
the likes of camera, audio/video player, Bluetooth, Internet connectivity, it’s
the Galaxy and Tizen phones that are ruling the roost.
These phones
are equipped with the latest processors, such as Qualcomm, Exynos, and feature
large memory for a streamlines performance. They are also known to support
additional storage media, in the form of OTG, memory cards, and more.
Along with
these, you can expect great camera functionality with high resolution front and
rear cameras adorning these phones. The latest high-end models also feature a
host of other features, such as fingerprint sensors, dual LED flash, NFC, and
more.
For
connectivity, many of the latest phones support dual-SIM, micro or nano types,
USB, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS, Wi-Fi Direct, 4G LTE and more.
Additionally,
the presence of various sensors helps in day to day tasks. Battery life is also
reasonably good in all of Samsung’s phones.
Samsung has
introduced a new Android flip phone in China, named W2016. It is a dual screen
phone with 3GB RAM.
